The website Taobao is one of the world’s biggest e-commerce stores within the top 10 of most visited websites on the planet owned by Alibaba. From a small apartment in Hangzhou, entrepreneur Jack Ma started the e-commerce company in 1999. A few years later he launched the website taobao.com, a platform for consumer-to-consumer business. Individuals could now easily open online stores serving customers all over China and Chinese-speaking regions.
Because of the great variety of sellers and often a limited amount of cash spend on photography, it has become a walhalla for people enjoying the genre of “useful photography”. This term, invented by a group of Dutch photographers, looks at anonymous photographs in sales catalogues, instruction manuals, packaging, brochures etc, and place them in a new context to create interesting new results.
For Taobao Stickeralbum photographers Ruben Lundgren and Matjaž Tančič, based in Beijing and Shanghai, brought together their best findings from the Chinese e-commerce platform. It highlights some fascinating, inventive and surprising products with items being shot in an unlikely and unconsciously humorous way. Who can’t enjoy the pleasure of a 3D corn T-shirt, a bouquet of fried chicken or a comfortable shithead? The project celebrates an often overlooked form of photography presented in the form of a sticker album designed by LAVA Beijing, with over a 100 unique stickers specially produced for BredaPhoto.
