The Europeans – Tony

The last butcher

Tony - The Europeans

“I’ve had this butcher’s shop since 1970. When I opened I had 11 competitors. Now I’m the only butcher in the city centre. In the past, everyone earned a wage, everyone worked in the local industry and knew where they stood. It was a golden age for the shops. These are more uncertain times. Many people have moved away, and many new people have arrived, including immigrants. There are more beggars than ever. People are robbed, even inside my shop. I’m fortunate to have regular customers. People come from far and wide to order their Christmas meat and Sunday meal from me.”
