The project title I’m so happy to hear you’re doing fine is taken from the movie A pigeon sat on a branch reflecting on existence by Roy Anderson, and is slightly melancholic. That melancholy also lurks in Bloemers’ work. Her work is one large self-portrait, in which the photos independently display a certain feeling or aspect. Through her work, she gets to know herself better; the work depicts a search for her own identity. Because she not literally uses herself in the image, the self-portraits symbolize a universal search for identity. Bloemers’ pictures often have an uneasy undertone: you do not know whether you look at a depressed portrait, or whether it is powerful.
