Bryan Schutmaat

Part of The Absent State project

Bryan Schutmaat (1983) tells the story of the many poverty-stricken people who can be found along American highways. They want to reconnect with their families and try to find work. Some have no other choice, while others choose to abandon their possessions and withdraw so as to follow a life free from consumerism and the constraints of government.

In 2014 Bryan participated in the World Press Photo Joop Swart masterclass. He also exhibited his series Greys the Mountain Sends, about mining culture in the American west, at the BredaPhoto festival. The book of this series named the best photo book at the New York Photo Awards, and was named one of the best photobooks of 2013 by The Washington Post and Photo District News.
