Jan Dirk van der Burg chosen as Photographer Laureate 2018

During the opening of BredaPhoto Festival, Jan Dirk van der Burg (1978) was chosen as Photographer Laureate 2018. Photographer Laureate is an initiative of the Nederlands Fotomuseum in Rotterdam and FOAM Photography Museum Amsterdam. Together they have set up the foundation Fotoweek to raise awareness among the public to look consciously to photography, to experience the pleasure of shooting and to offer a stage to professional photographers and photography stores. BredaPhoto Festival is the platform to present the Photographer Laureate.

Photographer Laureate at BredaPhoto Festival

Traditionally, the Photographer Laureate makes a photo series that can be seen on BredaPhoto Festival. This time, the exhibition can be found at the courtyard of Breda Botanique (the former Breda’s Museum). Van der Burg ran around the internet for this series and composed beautiful sequences as ‘aldermen of mid-sized municipalities with a buzz cut’ and ‘radiator whores’: prostitutes posing next to radiators.

With humor peppered documentary style

Ruud Visschedijk (former director of the Nederlands Fotomuseum and chairman of the directors of the foundation Fotoweek) writes in a letter to the new Photographer Laureate: “Jan Dirk van der Burg is a great ambassador for photography in the Netherlands, with its fresh, with a sense of humour peppered documentary style in which he almost always captivates ‘typical Dutch’ topics. Earlier Photographers Laureate were Ilvy Njiokiktjien, Koen Hauser, Ahmet Polat and Robin de Puy.
