For the 2018 edition of BredaPhoto, the team of Dutch curators has been expanded with three international associated curators. Based upon their rich network and knowledge-area these curators offer BredaPhoto extra eyes and ears for enriching the program of the upcoming edition of the photo festival.
With the effort of these curators BredaPhoto can follow the fast-paced developments in photography at an international level, keeping close to international movements, new knowledge and scouts of international photographers talent. We are happy to introduce these curators to you and invite you to visit their profile and website:
Mohamed Somji | Dubai
Mohamed is a photographer and the director of Gulf Photo Plus in Dubai. In 2016 he was one of the photographers who exhibited work at BredaPhoto. He exhibited his serie ‘Substations’ showing abandoned gas station. A serie he made together with Siniša Vlajković. About To Infinity and Beyond he says the following: “In the Middle East where I come from our issues are very much to do with the present. We have political turmoil, conflict and issues that have to do with day-to-day survival. So the future is quite interesting as how we see it: the future is a luxury.”
Yumi Goto | Japan
Yumi is an experienced independent art and documentary photography curator, editor, researcher and publisher from Japan who focuses on the development of cultural exchanges that transcend borders. You can read more about her and her work here. In thinking about photographers for BredaPhoto Festival she has a specific view on the 2018 theme: “When we are talking about this theme in Japan, we have a kind of history. With war, a tsunami, and earthquakes. From this perspective we are to talk about the future.”
Azu Nwogbogu | Nigeria
Azu is the founder and director of the African Artists’ Foundation (AAF), a non-profit organization based in Lagos, Nigeria. He is also founder and director of the Lagos Photo Festival, an annual international arts festival of photography. Azu about To Infinity and Beyond: “I like this theme a lot, cause it allows me to work with contemporary African artists who embrace the idea of ‘AfroFruturism’; imagining multiple futures because they are displeased with the concept of reality and what society has to offer them today.” Read more about Azu or follow him on Instagram.
In addition to the three ‘associated curators’, BredaPhoto also has three permanent curators who are responsible for the choice of the festival-theme and the creative choices and production of it. They also supervise photographic projects by BredaPhoto such as the International Talent Program and the Masterclass. Reinout van den Bergh, Geert van Eyck and Jan Schaerlackens programmed 55 photographers for the upcoming edition, who will show their work at BredaPhoto Festival 2018.
