Part of The Absent State project
Alejandro Cegarra (1989) explores how Venezuelans living in Petare and other large slums of the capital Caracas are dealing with the economic shortages that are haunting the country. Are Venezuelans being taking care of by their government or are they dependent of informal markets and networks?
Alejandro was born in Caracas. After working for an advertising agency for some time, he decided to pursue photography more fully. In 2012 he started working for Ultimas Noticias (the largest newspaper in Venezuela) and Ciudad Caracas, and later for Associated Press. He currently works for Getty Reportage as a featured photographer.
