The sincere and direct portraits of the masculine transgender people are an attempt by the photographer to bring nuances to the standard division between men and women. The project required a trip to 21 of the 50 US states that the photographer completed in three years. The work was published in a successful book combined with the Instagram account @americanboysproject. The 29 portrayed individuals are all between 18 and 35 years old and are all at a different stage of their transition. The sometimes explicit images are honest, direct and provide insight into the complex reality of gender identity.
This video gives a short introduction to the series.

Soraya Zaman (1980)
Australian photographer Soraya Zaman lives and works as a fashion photographer in New York, after a career in real estate. Zaman chooses to define herself gender neutral and uses the third person plural in English: they/their. Her work therefore focuses mainly on everything that has to do with gender identity and sexuality. Inclusivity is an important theme, which is also increasingly reflected in Zaman’s commercial assignment work. The book American Boys was published in 2019
On Sunday, October 18, 2020 Soraya Zaman was guest in the BredaPhoto Artist Talk Show on gender with the titel ‘What is different?’
