Transparências de lar

Ilana Bar Transparências de lar
Ilana Bar offers an intimate and tender glimpse into the daily life of a family living with Down Syndrome. Although a viewer may immediately perceive the protagonists’ condition, it is the narrative of their coexistence and relationships of affection that is the central theme of Transparências de lar—Transparencies of the Home.
Bar makes the images at her family’s rural home, where her father stays with two of his brothers and his son, Bar’s brother—all three of whom had Down Syndrome. The idea came to Bar in 2009, early on in her career, as a matter of instinct, when she realised that she felt comfortable making portraits, as well as self-portraits, turning her home into a scenic space that served as a backdrop for these images. These are photographs of a unique family in which all the characters intertwine to tell their photographic story.
Gradually, the project transforms into a documentary essay that reviews the layers of subjectivity in these familial relationships, through the prism of daily life. The images propose a reflection about existence, beauty, similarities and differences—in short, it is a work about affections.
