In 2008, the world was hit by a financial crisis. The unconditional trust in the free market, which had characterized the 1980s and ’90s, seemed to have reached its own limits. Even after a few rescue attempts, recovery remains fragile. At first, banks were collapsing, but now entire countries are on the verge of bankruptcy. Do we still have any influence on the world we live in?
BredaPhoto seeks to go beyond today's feelings of frustration, alienation and discontent. The theme of BredaPhoto 2012 is homo empathicus. This empathic man is diametrically opposed to the homo economicus, who merely values his environment in terms of individual gain. The homo empathicus embodies a new start.
