Nina Verbruggen

Das war einmal, which will be exhibited at BredaPhoto 2016, is a series about the 92-year-old Ms. Bouwels. After the death of her husband she lived alone for 20 years in her own home. Due to some physical limitations, the small acts in her life are often difficult. One of her limitations is that she suffers from an eye disease and therefore has poor sight. Still, she finds her way blindly in and around her own house; her safe and familiar environment. Her habitat ranges from the sidewalk at the front of the street, until behind the fence in her yard. The people around her help her with creating conditions to maintain her independence. Ms. Bouwels fulfills the ideal of the ‘participation society’ in the Netherlands. Reality, however, show that this particular situation is exceptional.
