Baudouin Mouanda

Part of The Absent State project

Baudouin Mouanda (1981) lives in Brazzaville, the capital of the Republic of Congo. Kinshasa, the capital of the neighbouring Democratic Republic of Congo and home to 10 million people, can be seen on the other side of the river. In 10 years time, this combined urban area is projected to be the largest on the African continent. Baudouin will show how entrepreneurial, young people cope in a megacity that is growing faster than the state can handle.

Baudouin has been making photos since he was 12 years old when he took his father’s camera. He studied law in Brazzaville, but changed to photography and captured life in his dwelling place. For his project ‘La Sapeurs,’ about Africa’s dandies, he received The Young Talent Award at the influential African Photography Biennial of Bamako in Mali.
